Founded on December 15, 1843, FMIC has continuously operated for 182 years as a mutual insurance company serving policyholder-members, originally in Maryland; and then in the new millennium, expanding the operating territory into Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, D.C., North Carolina and South Carolina. We work with respected independent agents who share our values.
Over the past five years, new products and coverage enhancements have accompanied our expansion into new states. We continue to deliver innovative products and services to our agents and policyholder-members.
What do you like most about being a business in Frederick?
Frederick Mutual Insurance Company was one of the first established businesses in Frederick County when it was founded in 1843. Since its origin, FMIC has provided insurance protection to its policyholder-members. Having a local presence enables FMIC staff to directly engage with policy-holders-members, particularly in the event of a claim.
Frederick county is known for its charitable giving and support for local 501 (c) (3) designated organizations.
Twelve years ago, when FMIC turned 160 years old, The Frederick Mutual Insurance Company Donor-Advised Fund was created in tandem with the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Each year, we work closely together to financially support local charitable organizations. The company also provides an employee and qualifying insurance agency charitable donation match program.
Why did you join the Chamber?
Since joining the Chamber fifty (50!) years ago, FMIC has sought to engage with the community to provide insurance products to local businessowners through its independent agency relationships. The Chamber helps businesses grow through promotion, advanced education, and their involvement in political affairs. FMIC supports the Chamber’s activities and is here to provide proper insurance products, coverage and services to support the local businessowners growth.
How has being a member of the Chamber benefitted FMIC?
We have stood in solidarity with the local businesses of Frederick County through our commitment to the Chamber for 50 years. We appreciate the opportunity to serve the Chamber, the community, and local businesses.

Pending regulatory approval from the Maryland Insurance Administration, Frederick Mutual will begin a strategic affiliation with Northern Neck Insurance Company. This milestone marks the beginning of a new collaboration between two historic mutual insurers, combining their strengths to deliver greater value to policyholder-members, agents, and communities across the Mid-Atlantic. The combined organization will support over 450 independent agency locations with a competitive portfolio, personalized service, and a unified commitment to long-term growth and profitability.
