Brewer's Alley

Housed inside one of the most storied structures in Frederick, Brewer’s Alley is proud to call 124 N. Market Street home. Over its long history, this iconic building has served as a bustling town market, an opera house, and even Frederick’s City Hall. In 1996, it made history yet again when Phil Bowers transformed it into Frederick County’s first brewpub, blending centuries of civic heritage with a passion for great beer and hospitality. Today, the team carries on that tradition by offering a modernized gathering place where locals and visitors alike meet over a great meal and a freshly brewed beer.

A conversation with Greg Brown, Owner

The modern craft beer landscape didn’t exist in 1996 when Brewer’s Alley opened. Tell us the brewpub’s origin story.

When Phil Bowers set out to open Brewer’s Alley in the 90s, local craft beer was still a foreign concept to many, and the local legislative framework wasn’t even in place. Frederick County hadn’t adopted licenses enabled by the state yet, requiring Phil and his partners to collaborate closely with city planners, zoning officials, and industry peers to pioneer the proper path forward. Beyond regulatory questions, they took a massive leap of faith on the former City Hall building, securing Maryland’s very first neighborhood revitalization grant to turn an empty, unused space into a functioning brewery and restaurant. Their persistence paid off, kicking off the craft beer movement in Frederick County and paving the way for the thriving industry we enjoy today.

At that time, opening a business on Market Street was risky. What did it take to establish Brewer’s Alley and how do you think its presence helped attract other business owners?

Thirty years ago, downtown Frederick was much quieter, and opening a large-scale brewpub was a big capital risk that depended heavily on early support from courageous friends and family investors. Taking inspiration from national trends in craft beer hubs out west, Phil and his team believed that a dynamic brewpub paired with an innovative menu could serve as an economic catalyst for North Market Street. Once Brewer’s Alley opened its doors, it proved that downtown Frederick could be a premier dining and entertainment destination, which instantly gave other entrepreneurs and retailers the confidence to invest nearby. That early momentum created a rising tide that lifted the entire downtown core, transforming Market Street into the regional destination it is today.

How has being a member of the Chamber benefited your business?

Being an active member of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce provides us with a powerful platform to connect, collaborate, and advocate for ourselves and the broader business community. As a Board Member and Chair of the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee, I am able to work alongside fellow leaders to champion policies that protect local businesses, safeguard our workforce, and drive economic growth. The Chamber is an incredible strategic partner that helps us stay connected to the needs of Frederick while ensuring our industry has a strong, unified voice at the local and state levels.

You don’t have a successful 3 decade run by standing still. How do you balance honoring the company and building’s legacy with evolving to serve a more modern audience?

Balancing our historic roots with evolution comes down to two main things – planning and people. We manage a strict capital plan to ensure we are making responsible, impactful enhancements to our Brand and employees, and we are constantly reinvesting back into the business. Whether we are making structural changes, like adding our popular rooftop bar, or refining our menu, we work tirelessly to pay homage to the past while delivering a contemporary, elevated experience.

Ultimately, though, the most important aspect of our business is our people. Choosing to invest heavily in our team and creating a culture that attracts and retains the best possible hospitality talent will always be our greatest tool for ensuring relevance, both now and in the future.

What do you want Brewer’s Alley to be known for?

We want Brewer’s Alley to be known as Frederick’s favorite gathering place – a true anchor built on culture, exceptional hospitality, and an unwavering commitment to our community. At our core, we strive to be a business that “Dares to be Great” every single day, which means taking elite care of our team, delivering outstanding food and beer to our guests, and actively giving back to the region that supports us.

How can the local community continue to support Brewer’s Alley and independent hospitality businesses?

The best way to support us is simply to continue choosing local – come gather with friends, share stories over meals, and enjoy a fresh pint on our rooftop or in one of our dining rooms. We’ve been honored to serve as Frederick’s gathering place for thirty years, and every time you choose to celebrate a moment with us, you help fuel the team and culture that keep this historic institution running.
