Tell us your business origin story.

From farmer Emma: I started growing vegetables – arugula specifically – when I was pregnant with my first child, because I read that arugula is packed with DHA vitamins that help with baby brain development. Growing my own vegetables absolutely wowed me because they tasted so much better than what I could find at the store and I could grow so many varieties I’ve never heard of before by shopping in seed catalogs.

After my second child was born 16 months after my first, I wanted to both raise my kids AND work. I decided to expand on my favorite hobby – vegetable gardening – and start a Community-Supported Agriculture farm to provide high quality, healthy food to families like mine in my community. Thirteen years later, I’m so proud to have kids who know all about how food is produced and to be growing for hundreds of families who care about how their food is grown and where it comes from.

What do you like most about being a business located in Frederick County?

Frederick County is gorgeous — between the mountain ranges and the Monocacy River — it’s full of incredible and supportive farmers and farming families, and Frederick city is very charming. I love how we’ve got everything we need right here, and can also easily visit Baltimore and DC, too!

What makes Moon Valley Farm unique?

Many things make Moon Valley Farm unique! We’re a first generation farm, self-taught and woman-owned. We grow and sell in all four seasons and our CSA program runs year-round too, which is pretty unique in the vegetable world! We help our customers succeed with eating seasonal and specialty produce with lots of education about the produce and how to cook it!

What do you want Moon Valley Farm to be known for?

We want to be known for having the tastiest, highest quality produce because we’re focused on stewarding our land responsibly.

Share some of your community involvement efforts.

Moon Valley Farm collaborates with 4+ regional nonprofits to distribute food to those living with food insecurity in Baltimore, PG County, Frederick, Southern PA + Washington DC. We donate excess produce we have from our farm and our partner farms!

Emma is heavily involved in the community as well and mentors beginner farmers, gives farm tours for schools and area professionals, lobbies Congress for better farm bills and serves the community via our Governor’s Agriculture Commission and the Board of Soil Stewards.

What does Moon Valley Farm do best?

High quality specialty produce grown with integrity and delivered with care, commitment and many recipes — grown by our community, for our community!
