Platoon 22 is a Maryland based non-profit that serves Veterans, First Responders and their families. Their mission is to end Veteran suicide by addressing barriers to successful military transition.Â
A conversation with Niki Falzone, Executive Director
What services does Platoon 22 offer?
Services include case management, peer support, recreational offerings, financial assistance, and the operator of the Platoon Veteran Services Center at Goodwill. Most of our services are rendering to Frederick County Veterans, but we do serve Veterans in the surrounding counties and states. Frederick is located within close proximity to three VA hospitals allowing Platoon to reach into those areas and states to provide wrap around services and support.Â
Tell us Platoon 22’s origin story.
Platoon was founded in 2014 in response to two Veteran suicides here in Frederick County. The intent was to raise awareness about the epidemic, but realized the lack of resources and access to correct information was a barrier. By addressing barriers to successful transition there can be a direct impact on the suicide rates.Â
By assembling critical resources, providing peer support, and assisting in the navigation or benefits/resources Platoon is able to ensure Veterans triumph through the transition from military service to civilian life.Â
What do you like most about being a nonprofit in Frederick?
Frederick County is leading the way with collaboration and partnerships. Businesses and non-profits alike do not thrive without collaborating together. As a non-profit leader there is not competition for dollars like we see in other areas, but rather ways to intentionally work together.Â
What makes Platoon 22 unique?
Platoon is focused on the Veteran in front of us. We do not adopt a one size fits all approach or work from a checklist to satisfy the need. Instead we assess those seeking services in order to create a personalized plan that will help them triumph through transition.Â
We also offer services to any Veteran, regardless of discharge status or background. Our goal is to meet any Veteran where they are today and help the achieve the best version of their tomorrow.Â
What do you want Platoon 22 to be known for?
I want Platoon to be known for it’s commitment to serving Veterans. One Veteran lost is too many and making sure the resource is well known has the potential to save a life. If a Veteran needs an answer to anything, call Platoon. We are always here to help.Â
This could be as easy as how to get a military discount from the box store or where to find a peer support group. There is nothing too trivial to reach out for help. We are here to help.Â
What ways can people in the community support you?
Spread the word. With 1 in 4 people identifying as military connected there is a large population that served, knows someone who served, or knows someone actively serving. Sharing about the mission and our services is one of the best ways the community can support.
What does Platoon 22 do best?
We listen. Platoon is not here to tell the Veteran what they need or force a treatment plan; our team is here to listen. By building rapport with our clients we are able to have a long term effect on the results.Â
Have any exciting promotions or interesting events/plans coming up?
3rd Annual Red Tie Gala. This is taking place on February 24th at Musket Ridge.Â
