Tell us about how ClearView Communities was founded and what services you offer.

Founded by Baltimore native Sylvan C. Herman and opened in 2011, ClearView Communities is a non-profit organization that has quickly built a reputation as a premier mental health program for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Our intimate size and high staff-to-resident ratio allow us to offer a uniquely individualized approach to care. Our well-appointed residences are warm, inviting homes that create a comfortable, fostering environment for healing, growth and preparation for real life.  We truly believe that through personalized treatment, community involvement and a desire to succeed, recovery from mental illness IS possible.

At ClearView, residents engage in comprehensive residential treatment with a focus on psychosocial rehabilitation. The combination of clinical services and community integration provides a unique approach to help individuals both manage their mental illness and gain the confidence and skills required to work towards independence.

Services provided at ClearView Communities may include; Psychiatry and Medication Management, Individual and Group Therapy, Staffed housing, Nursing, Family Therapy, Art Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Milieu Therapy, Supported Employment and Education, LIFT program, Independent Living and Activities of Daily Life skills support.

How has being in the Frederick community impacted ClearView?

The goal for our program since inception in 2011 was and is to be a part of a community so our residents could be a part of something bigger than the illness. We love being part of this community that continues to grow and diversify.

We joined the Chamber of Commerce to be a part of our own community and not just a program that existed in Frederick. We encourage our residents to integrate into our community and it only makes sense that our program does the same. We have cultivated many amazing relationships in the community through the Chamber of Commerce. These relationships benefit our mission, our residents, and our staff.

What is ClearView’s philosophy for helping residents get into recovery?

It’s our belief that treating the whole person — body, mind, and spirit — is a vital part of overcoming mental illness. ClearView residents have the option of participating in a variety of healthful options designed to promote well-being. We collaborate with nearby facilities and community organizations for physical fitness, recreational and social activities.

We recognize that mental illness is sometimes cyclical, and people may be at different stages of recovery. Our programming is flexible and completely personalized based upon our assessment of the individual resident. We believe it’s essential to look at the whole person including mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Is there anything else you would like members of the Chamber to know?

Below is a testimonial from one of our former residents.

When our daughter arrived after two years of trial and error solutions and patchwork approaches, we were not sure what to expect. All we knew is that our daughter would be treated as who she really was – a beautiful loving human being who was acting in a self-destructive manner that was totally out of character. The great news and good fortune for our family was finding an organization established on the basis of dignity for every person who has a mental health issue. There were no hard judgments or irreversible diagnoses about where a person was at in their life’s journey.
