Meet Maryland Road Trips

Where did the idea for Maryland Road Trips come from?

Maryland Road Trips was actually born out of a desire to support Maryland businesses in the tourism and hospitality sectors at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our sister company, Postern, provides marketing services to a wide variety of businesses in these industries, so we witnessed firsthand the economic devastation of the ensuing travel restrictions as clients, colleagues, and friends faced the prospect of closing their doors.

We knew we couldn’t sit idly by, so we undertook some research and creative brainstorming to come up with a solution that would be conscientious of the times we were experiencing but also have staying power well into the future. As we observed tourism trends, it became abundantly clear that a revival of car-based leisure travel was occurring. So, while many businesses shrunk their operations, we chose to expand by launching a new publishing arm–Postern Publishing. This became the vehicle (pun totally intended) to roll out Maryland Road Trips in September of 2020.

To date, our online content has showcased over 100 unique experiences and itineraries, featured 115 Maryland cities and towns, spotlighted over 400 Maryland businesses, promoted hundreds of destinations across the state, and supported 40 paid writers from our community. Our social platforms continue to experience rapid growth, which allows us to not only share our content to a broader audience, but it also helps us uncover the off-the-beaten-path gems just waiting to be discovered. As long as we’re helping point visitors from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond to all the state of Maryland has to offer, we’re successfully accomplishing our mission.

What makes Maryland Road Trips so unique?

Unlike conventional travel publications, we believe there is so much opportunity to reach people in more direct and meaningful ways utilizing digital platforms such as our website, social media channels, and digital advertising, which is why we are concentrating our energy in those spaces. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg as we see potential for expanding our content into an even more diverse multimedia experience.

Additionally, industry norms would typically focus on the larger tourism attractions and building partnerships with well-established businesses throughout the state as this approach is more conducive to the growth of a relatively new travel resource, but we want to remain true to our mission and focus content on lesser-known destinations.

What we find really exciting about what we do is that the topic of road trips offers an extremely broad appeal that transcends the narrow demographics of more niche travel resources. The sheer popularity of road travel is evident in the fact that the hashtag #roadtrip has over 59 million posts just on Instagram, and hashtags such as #ontheroad and #vanlife have over 12 million and 10 million posts respectively. We are confident that, no matter who you are or what your interests may be, there is something in Maryland Road Trips that will capture your attention and inspire you to hit the road.
