Wellness Practices, Tips, and Training for Creative Professionals

Join Sue Leveille of Give Rise Studio for a discussion and practice to support your overall wellbeing on Thursday, February 6 from 6–8pm.

Wellbeing isn’t without stress, anxiety or conflict. We can’t have one without the other, but we can perceive stress as more of an opportunity than an enemy. Let’s give our mind and body every opportunity to release what’s stuck and allow the current of creativity to flow continuously. Through breathwork, visualization and movement we can invite in steadiness and ease and keep stress that impacts our lives and work at a distance.

Give Rise Studio is located next to Starbucks at 106 N. Market Street, #A in Downtown Frederick. This event is free, though reservations are required via Eventbrite and space is limited.

February 26: Sacred Practices Evening Retreat

How do you define God? Are you clear about what you really believe or don’t believe? How do you put your spiritual beliefs into practice? Most of us are comfortable answering these types of questions with people we know hold similar beliefs or who are part of the church or spiritual community we participate in, but how comfortable are you when you don’t know what the other person believes, or maybe you know they come from a religious background that is radically different than yours? A lot of us grew up being told there were two things we should never discuss in polite company… politics and religion. At Wholistic Woman Retreats we believe that diversity is something to be valued. We believe that vulnerable communication where mutual respect is present leads to a deeper understanding and an expansive tolerance of differences and quite possibly a recognition that we are more alike than we are different. At this evening retreat, Founding Coach Laura Hall will give you the opportunity to gently step outside your comfort zone and speak your truths about what you believe and what your sacred practices are. As always, we will be taking a Wholistic Approach where will discuss how these beliefs and practices are integrated in the way we love (heart), think (mind), move (body) and connect to the divine (spirit). We look forward to seeing you and learning more about some of you deeply held beliefs that help shape you into the woman you are today!

March 2: “Baptism Through Incision”: A Talk by Martha Few

Martha Few, Ph.D., professor of history and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Penn State University, will give a talk titled “Baptism Through Incision: The Postmortem Cesarean Operation in the Spanish Empire.” In 1786, Guatemalan priest Pedro José de Arrese published a work instructing readers on their duty to perform the cesarean operation on the bodies of recently deceased pregnant women in order to extract the fetus while it was still alive. Although the fetus’s long-term survival was desired, the overarching goal was to cleanse the unborn child of original sin and ensure its place in heaven. Knowledge about cesarean operations and fetal baptism intersected with local and colonial beliefs, quickly becoming part of the new ideas and scientific-medical advancements circulating broadly among global Enlightenment cultures. This event is free and open to the public.
