I’ve spent the better part of my career in the halls of the U.S. House of Representatives, where the stakes are high and the digital noise is deafening. But when I come home to Frederick, I see a different kind of challenge: local businesses and non-profits with incredible stories that are simply getting lost in 2010-era communication strategies.
In 2026, “digital strategy” isn’t a luxury reserved for big tech or national politicians, it is the lifeboat of local engagement. Frederick is growing rapidly, but many of our local organizations are losing their voice because they are using jargon and outdated tactics in a world that demands human-centric empathy and data-driven narratives. To “work smarter,” Frederick leaders should adopt three core rules:
- Translate Jargon to Humanity: Stop talking about “strategic initiatives” and start talking about the person whose life was changed by your work.
- Data with a Pulse: Numbers alone are boring. Using numbers that prove a human impact are powerful. Frame your success through the lens of community growth.
- Be Where the People Are: Digital engagement isn’t just about posting; it’s about being present and responsive in the digital spaces where Frederick residents actually live.
Frederick has a unique spirit that national politics often lacks. We deserve a local communication standard that reflects that excellence. It’s time we stop just “broadcasting” and start truly connecting.
