A Conversation with Susan Schulman, Marketing & Communications Manager
Tell us your business origin story!
The Common Market was started as buying club located in the home of a local family who wanted healthy food for their family and friends. Through the dedication of volunteers who owned and operated the business, and supported the cooperative business principles, we are proud to have reached our 50th anniversary!
What do you like most about being a business located in Frederick County?
The diversity of the community and the county – you’ve got local businesses downtown and local farms just a short drive away.
What makes your business unique?
We carry the products of over 200 local farmers, growers, and makers! Our triple bottom line – people, planet, prosperity – measures our social and environmental impact in addition to our financial performance. We believe a business should be a positive contributor to the local community. We make a conscious effort to give back to our growing community in a variety of ways to show our gratitude for the community’s support of the co-op. We work to make the most environmentally friendly and sustainable choices while operating a viable business.
What do you want your business to be known for?
Everyone can shop, anyone can join! The Common Market believes that a business owned by its customers is in the best position to meet the needs and desires of those customers.
Share some of your community involvement efforts!
Common Market’s Bring-a-Bag for Change Program encourages shoppers to reuse bags and reduce waste by offering a 5¢ charitable donation for each reusable bag used at checkout. This program is a win-win—it keeps single-use bags out of the waste stream and gives back to organizations in the community. Our Ownership votes on the non-profits to be supported each quarter. In 2024 we collectively raised $13,480 and saved thousands of plastic bags from the waste stream.
What do you do best?
We take the chore mentality out of grocery shopping by hiring friendly team members who provide excellent customer service. Educational classes and events provide a sense of community. Our food standards and healthy attributes key allow shoppers to easily find the healthy foods that fit their lifestyle and dietary requirements.
Is there anything else exciting that you’d like the Chamber membership to know about?
The Common Market was recently approved for the WIC program! Both stores will be able to accept WIC cards this month. We also accept EBT cards for the SNAP program. Look for Co-op deals, Everyday Essentials, and Field Day for more savings!
Our 4th annual Loco for Local event will take place on Saturday, May 3 from 12 to 3 PM at the Rt. 85 store – including local farmers, food vendors, community partners, live music & family activities!
