Transformative Infrastructure Wins for Frederick County: A Decade of Advocacy Comes to Fruition

2026 has already proven to be a defining year for Frederick County. Two major infrastructure victories long championed by the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce have come to life. Both will have real, measurable impact on our economy, our ability to attract business and visitors, and our region’s quality of life.

These outcomes are the result of sustained advocacy by the Chamber, our partners, and the business community. They show what happens when you persist, collaborate, and keep pushing for the infrastructure our county needs to compete.

Downtown Frederick Hotel and Conference Center Breaks Ground

On February 6th, leaders gathered in downtown Frederick to celebrate the official groundbreaking of what will become the Marriott Downtown Frederick at Carroll Creek, a full‑service hotel and conference center developed by Plamondon Hospitality Partners.

Once complete, the hotel will feature 204 rooms and more than 26,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space. It will be the only venue in Frederick County capable of hosting a major national conference under one roof, opening the door to new business tourism opportunities and high‑value visitors.

“This is a moment our community has been working toward for years,” said Danny Severn, Board Chair of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. “Our Chamber identified this project early on because we knew our hospitality infrastructure needed to grow. To see Plamondon, Visit Frederick, the Downtown Frederick Partnership, and our economic development partners all aligned behind this shows what is possible when we work together.”

Plamondon Hospitality Partners has been headquartered in Frederick for nearly three decades and has been an active Chamber partner throughout that time. This project will create approximately 200 jobs and generate significant economic activity downtown. Estimates show more than $100 million in follow‑on development, strong tax revenues, and a major boost to the local tourism economy.

Route 15 Expansion Fully Funded

For years, U.S. Route 15 has ranked at the top of the Chamber’s transportation priorities. It is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Maryland, a vital route for commerce, commuters and freight. Traffic congestion and safety issues along sections of Route 15 have been outpaced by growth for decades. Thanks to persistent advocacy, support from our elected officials, and strategic engagement by the Chamber and business partners, funding is now secured within the state’s consolidated transportation program to address a variety of much needed improvements.

“Route 15 is more than a road. It is a lifeline for businesses in Frederick County,” said Rick Weldon, President & CEO of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. “This funding commitment is the culmination of years of effort by our members, our county and city leaders, and our state delegation. It will improve safety, reduce congestion, and support growth across every sector of our economy.”

The improvements include widening to add capacity in both directions and engineering upgrades that will dramatically improve safety on a corridor long identified as a high‑crash area. State officials have emphasized that these enhancements were made possible by building transportation revenue streams that prioritize safety, mobility, and economic competitiveness.

Route 15’s improvements will move forward in design and construction phases in the coming years, and the impact will be felt by local businesses that depend on reliable, safe transportation to connect customers, employees and suppliers.

Partnerships That Made It Possible

These wins are the result of decades of collaboration, vision, and leadership. Neither the hotel and conference center nor the Route 15 expansion could have happened without the combined efforts of businesses, elected officials, Chamber leaders past and present, and our economic development partners. They also could not have been achieved without the trust, engagement, and support of our members, especially our Partners in Trust, whose ongoing commitment provides the Chamber with the resources and stability to take on these long-term, transformative initiatives.

From early planning to today, previous boards of the Chamber laid the foundation by prioritizing these projects, building relationships, and championing the case for infrastructure investment. Their foresight, combined with the active involvement of our members and the consistent support from Partners in Trust, helped create the momentum that led to today’s successes.

Our City and County economic development offices have been critical partners every step of the way; providing guidance, coordinating with state agencies, and ensuring these projects fit into Frederick County’s long-term growth strategy. Visit Frederick and the Downtown Frederick Partnership helped strengthen community support and connect these projects to broader economic and tourism initiatives. The dedication of our Partners in Trust, along with the active participation of our general membership and strategic partners, amplified our advocacy and helped secure the partnerships necessary to move these projects forward.

For Chamber members, these projects are proof that long-term advocacy, strong partnerships, and active engagement deliver real results. They reflect our commitment to supporting Frederick County businesses, fostering collaboration, and creating opportunities for growth. With the continued trust and participation of our Partners in Trust, strategic partners, and members, the Chamber will keep working alongside local leaders to identify the next initiatives that strengthen our economy, create jobs, and make Frederick County an even better place to live, work, and do business.
