A Conversation with Brian Preuss, Business Owner
Tell us your business or organization origin story.
I retired from the U.S. Army in 2020 after more than 20 years of service, with most of that time in Special Operations being deployed around the world. When I was looking at options for life after the Army, I knew I wanted to stay put and be present for my family. Green Home Solutions was the perfect opportunity: it allowed me to apply my academic background in microbiology with all the leadership and organizational skills I gained through diverse assignments in the Army. More importantly, it offered a chance to serve the community in a different way: as a small business owner investing in the community and delivering unique services that can make a difference for each customer.
I started my business in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many of us had a new focus on the air around us, with more awareness about the impacts of airborne illnesses and indoor air contaminants. Numerous studies point to the link between poor indoor air quality and negative health effects, ranging from skin irritations and allergies to more serious illnesses such as asthma, cardiovascular disease, and neurological conditions. Enter Green Home Solutions: while each individual’s medical provider can help with their symptoms, we treat an individual’s indoor air environment. Our purpose is to improve the indoor air environment, mitigating harmful indoor air contaminants.
The three P’s of our business – products, processes, and people – make a difference by making air better for our customers. Our EPA-registered, plant-based PRODUCTS are 99.9999% effective at targeting molds, microbial growth, and other harmful indoor air pollutants. Our thorough PROCESSES, which use IICRC and ANSI protocols, are designed to detect the underlying causes, remediate the issues, prevent recurrence, and rebalance and restore the indoor air environment. And our PEOPLE are certified Indoor Air Quality experts who are eager to share our expertise to help each family breathe better air. And that’s what it all comes down to: making air better for families in our area.
What do you like most about being a business or organization located in Frederick County?
There are so many things to list! I’ll start with the unique community that exists in Frederick County: an eclectic blend of agricultural, trendy and chic, family-friendly, and nature-loving vibes. You can go for a hike at Cunningham Falls State Park, grab an ice cream from South Mountain Creamery, grab delicious authentic food at so many different options in or near downtown Frederick, catch a musical at Weinberg Center for the Arts, or go support local artists at Delaplaine…. all of this is possible to do in one day in Frederick County. All of these experiences truly nourish the soul and build lasting family memories.
What makes your business unique?
Three things make us unique:
1. Products: We use our proprietary EPA-registered, plant-based fungicide that is 99.9999% effective and works at the cellular level to break down allergenic microbes. We also offer an industry leading whole-home probiotic treatment that operates continuously for up to 90 days to actively target harmful indoor air pollutants.
2. Processes: We follow thorough protocols from beginning to end. Through our comprehensive inspection process, we aim to discover the source of a home’s indoor air quality issues. We offer a range of indoor air quality tests and use an independent, third party lab for evaluation. Then, we customize a treatment plan. Next, our remediation process follows strict IICRC and ANSI protocols designed to contain, eliminate, and prevent mold, odors, or other indoor air pollutants.
3. People: We invest in the training and development of our small team, so that we can share and apply our Indoor Air Quality expertise to deliver solutions that make air better for our customers. As a small business owner, I’m focused on creating a positive company culture that affords unique opportunities for each employee to reach their potential.
What do you want your business to be known for?
What I’d like our business to be known for is the professional expertise and kindness in the way that we deliver our services to help each family. What I wish people knew is that each job we do for each home is unique. There is no one-size fits all solution, and we work diligently with each customer to address and resolve their indoor air quality concerns. Our purpose is to make air better. You won’t find us adopting a bash-and-trash approach that can leave families with extra costs without remediating the underlying issues causing the mold, odor, or allergen problems.
Share some of your community involvement efforts.
As a veteran-owned small business, I actively support local veterans organizations. We also sponsor local school organizations. On a personal and family side, we are active volunteers in organizations that support veterans, especially veterans who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, as well as local schools and food banks.
What do you do best?
We are indoor air quality experts. Our customers love the fact that we provide fast, efficient, and effective services that make their air better for the long run. We are available to diagnose indoor air problems within 24 hours of a call and we provide customized proposals to fix the issues that same day. Our entire team, from the investigators conducting thorough inspections to the technicians responsible for remediation, keeps up with the latest in indoor air quality science and studies. They’re even listening to indoor air quality podcasts on the way to and from job sites. We do all of this so we can help our customers. I’m tremendously grateful for the passion the team has for helping each customer with their indoor air quality.

We are always looking for innovative and creative ways to partner with other local businesses.
