A conversation with Katie Hanna, President & CEO
Tell us your business or organization origin story.
My original degree was in animal behavior and psychology and I worked at an animal shelter in Baltimore for a number of years before moving back home to Walkersville and deciding to switch careers and take over my mom’s bookkeeping business. I got my Certified Bookkeeper license in 2011 and fully took over in 2016. Since then, I’ve been building up the business to include an amazing team of bookkeepers and helping as many small business owners as I can.
What do you like most about being a business or organization located in Frederick County?
I’m born and raised in Walkersville and community has always been very important to me. You know how they say it takes a village to raise a child – I think the same is true for a business. You need to build a network of other amazing professionals around you to support each other
What makes your business or organization unique?
We are definitely #notyourtypicalbookkeepers! For one, I am a licensed Certified Bookkeeper, which is not a requirement, but does mean that I have advanced knowledge and have to get continuing education in order to keep the license. But I like to say I think of things more as a small business owner than even as an accountant. I’ve been through every stage in the lifecycle of a business either personally or with one of my clients and I use that experience when advising and organizing things for my clients.
We are also a team – most bookkeepers are solopreneurs, but I have surrounded myself with amazing women. We all work remotely, but we still spend a lot of time together virtually and have just built this incredible culture of support and empathy.
What do you want Details Matter to be known for?
I want us to be known for our passion for education. I want every small business owner to be able to read, interpret, and understand their financial statements, so that they can make more informed business decisions and really understand the health of their business. I hear way too often people that are overwhelmed and stressed because they have no idea what is going on other than some vague numbers in their head.
Share some of your community involvement efforts.
I haven’t had as much time as I would like recently, but when I do have free time I love to volunteer at Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue. It’s great exercise and lots of horsie snuggles! I’m also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution which is also a service organization. Most recently we put together no-sew blankets for the Linus Project.
What does Details Matter do best?
I like to think that what we do is reduce stress and anxiety. As I said before, a lot of small business owners get overwhelmed by their bookkeeping either by having a lack of time or a lack of knowledge and just need someone to stand by them and give them a helping hand. And it’s not just data entry to us. For every new client, we re-organize their Chart of Accounts into a format that makes more sense. I always think “if this was my business, what would I want to know about it?”
Is there anything else exciting about your business that you want the Chamber membership to know about?
I’m working on a Small Business Bootcamp with Brianna Ryland of Hummingbird Wealth Management that will incorporate all sorts of different topics that a new business owner should know about. Coming this spring – stay tuned!
