A conversation with Annette Tinder, Partner
What does Capital River Wealth Management do?
Capital River Wealth Management is a comprehensive wealth management services firm with a mission of bringing our clients financial clarity in all areas of life – personal, family, business, and community. We take the time to get to know our clients and partner with them to put long-term financial plans in place which address the most important aspects of financial health: investing, insurance, retirement, legacy planning, tax-efficiency, and more. We believe that the strongest financial plan begins with the priorities you have for your life. That’s why we start by understanding your values, goals, and where you stand financially today.
Tell us Capital River’s origin story.
Our founder, Dan Schiffman, joined Northwestern Mutual in 1998. At the time, he was working for a consulting firm, but knew that his long-term goal was to get into the financial industry. Dan’s father passed away when he was in high school, and while in his 20’s—Dan spent a lot of time reflecting on the experience that his mother had with her financial planner during that time.
He had a vision for the experience that he believed she deserved, and it really motivated Dan to get into that industry and do better by people. He spent about 9 months researching the industry, different companies, and different methods of being in the business—and felt as though Northwestern Mutual most closely aligned with his values, but had not made a decision yet. By chance, Dan happened to be working at a career fair– and his company’s booth was right next to the Northwestern Mutual booth.
The rest is history! Dan has been with Northwestern Mutual ever since, formed Capital River Wealth Management in 2021, and brought on his long-time associates Annette Tinder and Luke McLaughlin as partners in the business in 2022.
What do you like most about being a business in Frederick?
Frederick really does feel like a unique community with unique opportunities—especially as owners of a professional services firm. Frederick is a robust and growing community with plenty of opportunity to serve great clients. On the other hand, Frederick has been able to retain a strong sense of community with a sense of interdependence between people and community responsibility. These two aspects, along with living here and being business owners, allows us to have a very fulfilling professional lives, knowing that having our type of business has an impact both very directly with a client, and also contributes to a greater community fabric. It is incredibly fulfilling to us, to feel counted on- personally, professionally, and within a community.
Why did you join the Chamber and how has the Chamber benefitted your business?
The Chamber provides a great opportunity for us to learn from other business owners, and a great opportunity to stay up to date with what is going on in the community. We love having access to the many professional development opportunities that the Chamber offers, as well. We recently participated in SHE Week and Dan and Annette are Leadership Frederick grads, and they were both excellent experiences that allowed us to form relationships with great local people.
What do you want Capital River Wealth Management to be known for?

We hope to be known for the meaningful relationships we have forged throughout the years, for providing exceptional planning and advice to our clients, and of course for our legacy of service to our community.

Has anything exciting happened over the past year for Capital River Wealth Management?
Dan recently celebrated his 25th anniversary with Northwestern Mutual, and to honor the milestone the team at Capital River Wealth Management threw a party at Union Mills Public House and invited our family, and clients to come join us and toast to 25 years. We’re so grateful for the trust and support that our clients have placed in us over 25 years, so it was nice to spend a little time thanking them. We’re looking forward to even more exciting things to come in 2024!
