Member of the Month: Alison J. Bomba, Psy.D., LLC

In 2007 just after graduating with her doctorate, Dr. Bomba joined a large group practice in Howard County as an independent contractor.

It was there that she became more and more aware of the lack of specialized services in Frederick County (where she lived), and in 2015 made the decision to relocate her independent practice to Frederick County.

Dr. Bomba developed her areas of specialty naturally as, over time, she found herself drawn to young people struggling to tolerate the inevitable emotions of anxiety and grief.

She loves teaching children how to manage discomfort rather than avoid or escape difficult emotions and seeks to serve the youth of Frederick County in this capacity.

“There’s a reason why Chamber’s of Commerce hold a special place in the heart of a community. Chamber’s bring together special people who do special things, mostly individual and critical services that would never be seen by most folks. Dr. Alison Bomba is one of those examples. Alison is a licensed psychologist, author and speaker who specializes in children, adolescents and young adults. In addition to her transformative work, she’s also deeply committed to her community. She’s been actively involved with the Chamber’s S.H.E. Week event series, and is a member of the current LFC Class. We’re proud to have a community change-agent like Alison in our Chamber family!” – Rick Weldon, President & CEO Frederick County Chamber of Commerce

Dr. Bomba in Practice

I am a licensed psychologist who has been treating children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 3-25) in private practice since 2007. My areas of specialty include grief/loss therapy and the cognitive behavioral treatment of anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

In addition to in-office services, I have Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) granted by the PSYPACT Commission which allows me to conduct psychotherapy with clients via telepsychology when they are physically located in a participating PSYPACT state. Telepsychology has proven to be an effective way for me to extend my services by removing geographic barriers to those needing specialized treatments.

I hope my business is known for providing high quality specialized services (for pediatric grief/loss, anxiety, and OCD), professional consultations, and speaking engagements. I also hope I am thought of as someone people trust to provide strong referrals when other skilled providers are needed.

A Unique Type of Practice

By specializing, as opposed to being a ‘general’ child psychologist, I’m able to more intensively and effectively help clients achieve real results, faster. I use evidence-based treatments to include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapies. Individualized treatment goals are identified at the outset, progress is continually measured, and clients graduate when all goals have been met.

Regarding patient care, I validate the human experiences of anxiety and grief and easily establish rapport with young people. This helps me effectively empower my clients to fully engage in the therapeutic process, face their fears, and do the homework necessary for successful treatment. On the customer service side, I return every phone call and reply to every email within 24 hours. When I receive calls from interested new clients who have needs that don’t fit my areas of specialty, I provide referrals when possible in an attempt to connect them with appropriate providers.

Dr. Bomba in the Community

Being involved in the community is something I find incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally. In addition to direct patient care, I am on the Mental Health Association of Frederick’s board of directors. I am also a member of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, member and former board member of the Maryland Psychological Association and member of the Pro Bono Counseling Project. I have also participated on the Frederick County Interagency Early Childhood Committee and the Frederick County Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Workgroup.
