Summer Carnival by Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services

Our carnival season kicks off this week and continues through July. Most have rides with food and entertainment. It’s a summer tradition! Carnivals give communities the opportunity to support their local fire and/or rescue organizations. Carnivals usually run weekly at night. It’s a great family atmosphere. It’s a great place to catch up with neighbors and friends who make the track out each year to support their local company. It’s a great way to learn about our service and what volunteering opportunities are available.

Shakespeare Festival by Hood College

The first show in the festival is Romeo & Juliet, directed by Christine Moseres, and will have five or six performances. The show with intermission will run two and a half hours. Romeo is being played by a Deaf actor — precast with Broadway actor Josh Castille. Josh was in the Tony-nominated 2015 revival (by Deaf West Theatre) of Spring Awakening. The actor playing the voice/shadow of Romeo is also a Broadway veteran – Daniel Maldonado (from Broadway’s Moulin Rouge). We have received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to help us with the added high cost of interpretation during rehearsals — as we will have a Deaf lead actor, a Deaf member of our Greek Chorus, and a Deaf assistant director. The second show will be Comedy of Errors, directed by Aaron Angello. The show with intermission will run an hour and 40 minutes.

“The Frederick Shakespeare Festival, which takes place on the campus of Hood College, offers free, professional, outdoor theatre to the community. This summer, they will present, in repertory, Romeo and Juliet (featuring Josh Castille, renown Deaf actor from Broadway’s Spring Awakening, in the role of Romeo) and Shakespeare’s delightful farce, The Comedy of Errors, performed with only eight actors. Visit www.ESPTheatre.org for dates and information.”
