Women Owned Businesses in Frederick: Meet Frederick Birth Center

In celebration of S.H.E. Week Frederick, 2020, each day we are highlighting a woman owned Frederick business. They will be taking over our Instagram and sharing their story here on our blog.

Each of these businesses show strength, heart, resiliency and proof that women deserve equal footing in our business sector for the hand work, creativity and passion they bring to their industries, our community and the world!

We hope you’ll take some time to read about them, support them on social media, and support their businesses when you get a chance.

The Frederick Birth Center Story

The Frederick Birth Center provides maternity and birth services, as well as well-woman care including pap smears, birth control, and STD. Frederick Birth Center opened on May 31, 2018. Owner Mychal Pilia fell in love with midwifery and wanted to provide this type of service to the community after the birth of her three children.

The mission of Frederick Birth Center is to provide a homelike, safe, alternative birth experience while maintaining the highest standards of quality of care for women and their families.

Frederick Birth Center (FBC) believes that the well-being of the community starts with women and families through education on general health, pregnancy, normal birth, breastfeeding, and the postpartum period. FBC stands to empower women to take charge of their own health by promoting family-centered, therapeutic and respectful care. FBC midwives understand that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are normal processes and they advocate nonintervention when appropriate. FBC strives to incorporate the latest scientific findings into clinical practice.

Being Business Owners in Frederick

Small businesses in Frederick are supportive of one another and collaborate with each
other for the good of the community.

Being a Woman Owned Business

As a woman-owned business, I feel like more women’s voices are being heard, however, the amount of assertiveness needed is still a challenge.

What Makes The Frederick Birth Center Unique

Frederick Birth Center is currently the only freestanding birth center in Maryland as of May 15th.  The other birth center just closed after the owner  retired after 30 years of service. Giving birth at a free standing birth center offers families the opportunity to give birth in a supportive home like environment with the safety of the care with Certified Nurse-Midwives and nurses. They also offer women the opportunity to give birth in water and have 3 birth pools in their facility. Midwives spend more time with clients, than traditional medical model of care, counseling and educating them so they can make informed choices. This is called collaborative care with informed decision making. The Frederick Birth Center only takes low risk women, and and birth is unmedicated (no epidurals or IV pain medication) in their facility.
