Things to Do in Frederick: October 5, 2019
The Maryland Breakfast Festival
The Maryland Breakfast Festival is coming to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds on Saturday October 5th, 2019! The festival will begin at 10 am and conclude at 2 pm. Enjoy celebrating the most important meal of the day with us. Local restaurants will be present with their “signature breakfast dish” for purchase, samples and our “Biscuit & Gravy” competition for all ticket holders to enjoy (special competition tickets required).
First Saturday – October: Spirits of the Season
First Saturday means all day activities, late-night shopping and dining, live music on the street, and a free trolley to guide your way! During October First Saturday, celebrate local food and beverage.
Death and Destruction in Downtown Frederick – First Saturday Walking Tour
This pay-what-you-please walking tour will unveil the true cost of war to the residents of Frederick. What did they endure? How did they move on? Visitors will walk the same streets as Union and Confederate soldiers and hear the words of those who witnessed the chaos as the Civil War came crashing into the city. The program will begin in the lobby of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine at 3:00 PM.
Thurmont Plein Air
This event will feature local artists painting outdoors at one of Thurmont’s wineries. Guests are invited to visit the four local wineries in Thurmont and watch local artists paint the vineyard landscapes. Guests are invited back to the Thurmont Main Street Center located at 11 Water Street at 1:30 pm for the judging of all of the paintings. Each artist will also have their painting of the day for sale. Don’t miss this fun event! Wineries include: Catoctin Breeze Vineyard, Detour Winery & Vineyard, Lings Bridge Vineyard, & Springfield Manor Winery, Distillery & Brewery.
Brunswick Railroad Days (October 5th & 6th)
Railroad Days is an annual two-day festival that takes place the first full weekend of October – rain or shine! Come be a part of our BIG TOWN, SMALL CITY, and enjoy our food, drink, music, games, crafts, restaurants, businesses and vendors! This year, Brunswick Railroad Days is proud to feature Vinyl Rhino on Saturday, October 5th in Square Corner Park, in the heart of the festival!

Cat Tales Under a Full Moon
Laura Armstrong, clarinet and Jennifer Rundlett, flute, will open our concert season with a set of charming works inspired by our favorite feline companions. Featuring the music of Adrienne Albert, Daniel Dorf, Claude Debussy, Victor Herbert, Olivier Messiaen and more. With special faculty assists from pianist John Wickelgren and cellist Adam Gonzalez, this music promises to purr, prowl, lurk, and arrogantly strut its way into your heart.

Grant Writing for Beginners/How to Find Grant Opportunities
This is a Pay-What-You-Can Nonprofit Training Double-header! That’s one event and two trainings presented seemly! In this interactive and engaging workshop, you will learn A LOT, including: • How grants fit into a nonprofit’s overall fundraising strategy • How to identify funders that may have an interest in your activities • How to assess your project’s fit with a prospective funder’s interests • The standard sections of a foundation proposal • The different types of grant sources • Better-known and lesser-known strategies for finding grant opportunities • How to determine if a grant opportunity is right for your organization (and project) • Some of the trainer’s grant research secrets • Tips for increasing your chances for success **BONUS** You will practice writing a Needs Statement and receive on the spot feedback. This workshop is PAY WHAT YOU CAN, with a $30 seat reservation fee (deposit). The fee helps cover the cost of training materials and logistics. You will be asked during the session to pay for the training you receive based its value to you.

Ongoing/Repeating Events in October
Fall Festiv-All at Adventure Park USA
Enjoy all your favorite attractions and discover new ones at Adventure Park USA’s Fall “Festiv-All”! The family-fun activities include a pumpkin patch, a pillow jump, hayrides, a straw maze, zip-lining, pumpkin bowling, mini excavators and an Adventure Barnyard with live farm animals. The festival also features a Native American experience with daily performances including tomahawk throwing and archery lessons! The festivities kick off Friday, September 27, 2019 and will operate through Thursday, October 31, 2019. Admission is $8 per person Monday through Thursday and $12 Friday through Sunday. Parking is free. The Festival will operate Monday – Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Weekend hour are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m
Summers Farm Fall Harvest Festival
This is the season for homegrown fun and farm fresh adventures at Summers Farm in Frederick, Maryland. Fall farm attractions include a gigantic NASA-themed 50th Anniversary “Landing on the Moon” cornfield maze, hay rides, pig races, jumping pillows, farm animals, pick your own pumpkins, hay slides, and more! Enjoy nights at the farm with our flashlight corn maze or reserve a campfire site. Fun for kids from 2 to 92. Open September 21 – October 31.
Maryland Ensemble Theatre: Goodnight Moon
One of the most cherished children’s book of all times springs to life onstage in this delightful and imaginative musical for the whole family. Bunny’s room magically comes alive as he dances and sings his way to sweet dreams through nursery rhyme scenes with dancing bears with chairs, the Cat and the Fiddle, the Cow Jumping Over the Moon and even a trip through the night sky with dancing constellations.
Murder and Mayhem Walking Tour
Explore the “other side” of Frederick’s history, including some of the most scandalous, nefarious, and unbelievable moments in the city’s storied past. Stories include bootlegging, bank robberies and the case of Granville Smeltzer & Mary Nussbaum. *Tour starts at the Museum of Frederick County History, 24 East Church Street, Frederick, MD
Trivia Night
Hometown Harvest Kitchen will now host trivia nights every Tuesday! Get your smartest friends together and come enjoy some great food and drinks over Trivia. Hosted by Pour House Trivia, Frederick’s finest trivia hosts! Registration and sign up starts at 6:30 with the game going from 7-9.
