Rock the 40th

Rock the 40th is a new twist on our annual event known as Walk a Mile in Their Shoes. In celebration of 40 years of service to victims and survivors and to raise awareness to issues that have stayed in the dark for far too long, this year we will ROCK Heartly House’s 40th Anniversary! Our annual Walk a Mile awareness event will be capped off with a ROCKING concert, food trucks and local craft brews at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater. Walk registration is $40.00 for adults and $10.00 for full time students and includes: An easy stroll down Frederick’s Historic Market Street to raise awareness and support the clients we serve at Heartly House A swag bag and t-shirt Rocking music – will start up where the Rocking Walk ends – at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater Food and beverage – local craft breweries and food trucks will be on hand to keep everyone fed and watered And did we mention… the music? Come see performances by Chole Antulov, Luna, and The Feddie Long Band Can’t make the walk but can’t miss the Music? One Vast Adventure: Frederick At War

155 years ago, a Confederate army threatened to burn down Frederick if the city didn’t pay a $200,000 ransom. Our ancestors saved the city, but do you have what it takes to make history? On Saturday September 21, history comes to life around you in One Vast Adventure – Frederick At War- a one-of-a-kind, entertainment experience! Play games, scour the city for clues, and solve puzzles, all while investigating costumed characters throughout the immersive world of 1864 Frederick. Race to raise the ransom money in this 5 hour, city-wide adventure – will you be able to save Frederick from the flames? Tickets include food and drink samples, exclusive specials from participating stores, plus access to the entertainment experience and after-party. Come and live your vast adventure in this immersive show, where all of downtown Frederick is the stage. There is no better way to experience the Frederick of 2019 than by saving the Frederick of 1864! Don’t just learn about history, live your history! Circle of Hope Fundraiser at Flying Dog Brewery’s Tasting Room

Join Flying Dog Brewery and Roasthouse Pub as we raise money for Circle of Hope – a nonprofit that focuses on encouraging the physical and mental development for all ages with developmental, psychological, or physical disabilities. Donate $20 at the door and enjoy unlimited samples, light snacks, and live music from Bad Influence. Please note that no one under the age of 21, including babies and small children, is allowed in the brewery.

FCC Family Festival

Frederick Community College will host the FCC Family Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Carl & Norma Miller Children’s Center. A one-mile kids’ fun run will kick off the festivities at 9:30. The festival and fun run are free and open to the public. All activities will take place near the Children’s Center at the rear of the main campus on Opossumtown Pike (click here for campus map.) Families and children of all ages will have an opportunity to enjoy face painting, trackless train rides, balloon artist, hands on games, and more. There will also be a one-mile kids’ fun run.

In the first 2 hours of the class the following objectives will be covered by Brett Kraimer, CEO CycleFit Frederick. 1. Introduction to Business Models and the Business Model Canvas 2. Nine building blocks of the Business Model Canvas 3. Differentiation and Competition: Assess the competition level of different companies 4. Why Business Models Fail & How to Avoid it The second half of the class will be a hands-on workshop, led by Kathie Callahan Brady, where you will be putting it all together and creating your own business model.

Dementia Friendly Frederick Free Film Event

We personally invite you to join us on Thursday, September 26 from 1-4:30pm for our Dementia-Friendly Community Film Event. This exciting event will raise awareness of the challenges faced by people navigating dementia. Together, we will foster support and build an engaged community of resident volunteers, business partners, and public and private entities to serve local senior-based needs. The event will include a screening of the film “What They Had,” starring Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon, Robert Forster, and Blythe Danner. Following the film, an expert panel will discuss issues related to dementia and take questions from the audience. The event will also include informational tables and light refreshments.

Historians to Discuss the Roles of African Americans in the Confederate Army

Historian and author Kevin Levin will discuss his recent book that tackles the myth of African American Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Levin’s book, “Searching for Black Confederates: The Civil War’s Most Persistent Myth,” discusses his research into claims that high numbers of both free and enslaved African Americans fought willingly as soldiers in the Confederate army. His talk will include relevant primary sources and their interpretation, the roles that African Americans actually performed in the Confederate army, and evidence that the belief in the existence of black Confederate soldiers originated in the 1970s. The program will explore the myth and its persistence today.
